Our Story

Like any successful, lasting business, CAS Severn has prospered by fulfilling a need in the business community, helping companies make the best IT decisions possible for their needs.

Carson Soule and Doug Gerstmyer founded the company in 1978. At the time, Gerstmyer was attempting to expand a business in the automotive industry. While trying to acquire software for an IBM System/32 computer, he realized how difficult procuring small business software could be. He and Soule saw the need for a software house to create software products and provide services for small businesses, and CAS Severn was created.

It began as Computer Applications Specialists, with a small team of five programmers.

Over the years, the company has grown and expanded. In the early 1980s, we saw the opportunity to further our offerings by developing software applications for retail, distribution and non-profit organizations. This move helped us expand our client base and establish a network engineering practice. In the 1990s, we became an IBM hardware reseller to complement its software and service offerings. In 1995, we moved into a 31,000 square foot facility in Laurel, Md. to accommodate our growth.

We opened a second location in Richmond, Va. In 1998 to provide closer resources to the southern region. Then, in 2001, Severn Companies, Inc. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of CAS, a move which expanded our industry coverage to the public sector, federal government and higher education accounts.

Today, we have more than 130 employees working in offices in eight locations throughout the country.

Through it all, the focus has been simple: provide clients with the intelligent answers they need to get the job done. Whether it's helping a client to augment their staff, advising on products that will fulfill their business needs or helping them to use the resources they have more efficiently, the team at CAS has been there to answer the call.

When your business has a problem, you don't want to turn to Internet searches to help you sort it out. You want a real person, an expert with years of experience, to lead you through it. That's intelligent answers. That's CAS Severn.

Founded in 1978, CAS first served small, medium and large businesses in the Washington Metropolitan Area with custom application development for IBM AS/400 systems (and its predecessors).

In the early 1980s, we saw the opportunity to further our offerings by developing software application packages for retail, distribution and non-profit organizations. By expanding into software packages, we expanded our customer base to cover the entire country. With the emergence of personal computers and local area networks, we established a network engineering practice.

In the early 1990s, we became an IBM hardware re-seller to complement its software and services offerings. With this change, we expanded the range of IBM hardware and software supported to cover the entire IBM product set. We made a significant investment in creating a world-class engineering and technical services group that could integrate the diverse IBM offerings into total solutions for our customers.

We listened to needs of customers and continued to adopt and support new IBM technologies in the areas of server, storage, and software technology. We then brought all these areas together to provide a total solution to fulfill customer requirements.

In 1995, Co-owners Doug Gerstmyer and Carson Soule built and moved into our current 31,000+ square foot headquarters location in Laurel, Maryland. This was necessary to accommodate our company growth.

In 1998, we opened our second location in Richmond, Va. to provide closer resources to customers in the southern region of Virginia.

In 2001, Severn Companies, Inc. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of CAS. This joining of companies expanded our industry coverage model to now include public sector and federal government accounts.

In 2008, we established a partnership with HP and further expanded our set of offerings.

In 2009, we built a separate data center with redundant power, a generator, 24-hour security and many other features based on the requests from customers to provide a site where they can have their production systems and/or disaster recovery systems hosted.

In 2010, we acquired the N/Compass software suite from our long-time partner Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions as part of our strategy to continue to grow our core business and leverage the strong skills of our staff.

Today, CAS Severn has the capabilities and expertise to provide a total IT solution and has offices in the following locations:
  • Laurel, Maryland- Headquarters
  • Richmond, Virginia
  • Manchester, New Hampshire
  • Forest Hill, Maryland
  • Denver, Colorado
  • St. Louis, Missouri
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
