MODERN BUSINESS APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT
CAS Severn delivers a solution that solves the customer’s business problem, no matter what the
platform, operating system, programming language, or business problem domain. CAS Severn has a
diverse set of technology and market experience to deliver the correct solution. Our service
experience includes full custom application development, staffing, and mentoring. Listed below
are a few of our client stories and the solutions that CAS Severn developed.
Story 1
A local county government needed
to create a website for county residents to utilize a diverse set of
county services on-line. They wanted to implement IBM’s WebSphere as the
application server for their site and to interface with their existing
IBM mainframe systems. The problem was that their existing staff had
programming CICS programming skills but no WebSphere or Java skills.
CAS Severn solved the county’s situation with a mentoring approach. J2EE application developers from CAS Severn
worked side by side with the county IT staff on the first of several applications. The mentoring engagement
included full development infrastructure installation using CVS as the source code repository, Java and J2EE
training, WebSphere Studio Application Developer training, and application architecture techniques. The
mentoring engagement also included WebSphere Application Server Cluster, IBM HTTP Server, and IBM Edge Server
administration support and training.
The mentoring engagement allowed the county to move into new technologies with their existing IT staff and
provide modern day Internet services to their residents.
Story 2
A beverage distribution software
vendor needed to create an order fulfillment application for salesman and
delivery truck drivers in the field. The application needed to interface
with their existing distribution system running on IBM’s AS/400 (i5) platform.
CAS Severn delivered a C++ application running on an industrial PDA device over the Palm operating system. The
application provides order entry, customer, and store inventory support for sales reps. Delivery truck drivers
use the application for delivery route optimization, order fulfillment, GPS location, and receipt printing. The
application synchronized all daily activities via wireless and Ethernet interfaces to the AS/400 (i5) system.
The application gives the software vendor an obvious edge over their competitors in the beverage distribution
industry.
Story 3
A same day package delivery company
needed a solution that would automate their deliveries. The system needed
to automatically assign a dispatcher and route the package from delivery
source to delivery target by selecting the most optimized airline flight
for the delivery. Delivery agents across the nation needed to be
electronically notified in order to pick-up and deliver the package at the
appropriate airport.
CAS Severn developed a Visual Basic client server application interfacing with a backend AS/400 (i5) database as the
automated dispatching system. The application provided a workflow that allowed the dispatchers to process the
packages in several delivery states. Delivery agents around the country communicate via a browser to acknowledge
receipt and delivery of packages.
The dispatch application allowed the delivery company to process daily workloads with less staff which lead to a
large savings in operation costs.
